strange moth

I found a large moth with squarish wings the other day. I think it would have been a hawk moth. Are these unusual as I have never seen one like it before.

Coooool, did you stick a pin through its head and mount it on yir mantlepiece??? My favourite's the spanish moon-moth but i wouldn't kill one...

If it's like the one I saw, it's a poplar hawk moth. Apparently very common, but I had never seen one like it eiher.
