Please don't worry,

I have copied all the personal information from this computer onto six disks (or was it seven?) and sent them by secure courier - or anyway it was a van I think - to somewhere safe. Although I think one might have ended up in the bin . . . and the dog went off with one, but it is very unlikely anyone will find it . . .

On a more serious note:
the information on the missing disks (the child benefit database) could enable fraudsters to combin the basic data contained on the computer discs with other personal information in the records, such as the names of people's children, to unlock their bank accounts.

The personal data in the missing discs amounts to an 'identity theft heaven'

Information on senior politicians, police officers and leading industrialists will be included in the missing data, which contains records on nearly half of Britain's population.

The effect could be financially crippling for the millions of families caught up in the security breach. The lost records contain the names, addresses, dates of birth and national insurance numbers of seven million families, and in the vast majority of cases, their bank account details. This information could enable criminals to take out bank accounts, loans, and credit cards in people's names, ruining their credit ratings and inflicting untold financial damage on families.

Personal details, such as the names of a parent's children, could give fraudsters a clue to their account passwords.

Now, if you could all just email me your personal and bank account details I promise I will keep them safe.
