(source - Daily Telegraph)the information on the missing disks (the child benefit database) could enable fraudsters to combin the basic data contained on the computer discs with other personal information in the records, such as the names of people's children, to unlock their bank accounts.
The personal data in the missing discs amounts to an 'identity theft heaven'
Information on senior politicians, police officers and leading industrialists will be included in the missing data, which contains records on nearly half of Britain's population.
The effect could be financially crippling for the millions of families caught up in the security breach. The lost records contain the names, addresses, dates of birth and national insurance numbers of seven million families, and in the vast majority of cases, their bank account details. This information could enable criminals to take out bank accounts, loans, and credit cards in people's names, ruining their credit ratings and inflicting untold financial damage on families.
Personal details, such as the names of a parent's children, could give fraudsters a clue to their account passwords.
