Another Scottish company quits the CBI

Post by NickB »

.
Broadcaster STV has quit the CBI business group following its decision to formally back the pro-Union No campaign ahead of this year’s independence referendum. They said the move conflicted with their duty of impartiality.

So they are quitting because they wish to remain neutral. Yet you infer they are quitting because they disagree with the CBI's decision to back the No campaign. To do that is deliberately misleading which is why you have presented it as a new thread. Is that not a fact?

I inferred nothing.

I stated a fact and quoted what the company in question had said.

My post was in no way misleading.

You seem confused.

And now, according to tomorrow's Herald, Visit Scotland and Scottish Enterprise have also quit the CBI.

They have messed up big time - and it couldn't happen to a nicer organisation :D

yet again you try to imply that they are leaving the CBI because they support the Yes Campaign. Otherwise you would not have mentioned it.

But no matter how biased it should be obvious to most that Visit Scotland and Scottish Enterprise have to be seen to be neutral. What will be of more significance is the number of real businesses that quit the CBI, Of course there will be some, but lets see the number that leave compared to those that stay with the organisation that is backing the No campaign.

Those that leave will be early victims of the upheaval and uncertainty for business caused by the Yes Campaign's divisive drive for Scottish Independence. Presumably those businesses join the CBI for some benefit which, if they leave, will be lost. Those businesses that put supporting an independent Scotland before being in the CBI are the first to be disadvantaged.

It's yet another ingredient to creating a two tier Britain, Scotland being the poorer part. Turkeys voting for Christmas.

I implied nothing. Do try to read what I actually write.

You are correct, these businesses are not leaving the CBI because they support the YES campaign.

They are leaving because the CBI is supporting the NO campaign.

The CBI have made a big mistake.

Not really. Scottish members make up a tiny percentage of the CBI. For those that leave, it is their loss. They lose access to the biggest business group in the fastest growing economy in the G7, and an economy 10 times the size of Scotland's. Scottish Independence is a lose, lose situation for much of Scottish business. Where are the big business leaders who support Scottish Independence? They can spot a two tier Britain a mile away. They don't want a two tier Britain, and they don't want Scottish Independence.

And that's why the CBI is pouring a load of money in to support the No Campaign!

Now Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen universities have all left the CBI

I expect more will follow.

No surprise. Quite understandable. They need to be seen as neutral. Although they should lean to the No vote on the basis that when they have done mock referendums in some universities a greater proportion of voters have voted No than you even get in the wider electorate.

And now:

Glasgow Caledonian University
Strathclyde University
The Law Society of Scotland
Skills Development Scotland
Highlands and Islands Enterprise
SQA

All gone.

I believe the CBI only has (had) about 80 members in Scotland.

11 gone already.

All organisations that need to show impartiality. No news here. Just a Yes supporter trying to construe them as supporting the Yes Campaign....which isn't true. Is it?
