This may sound like a stupid question, But, What is crofter? I have been seeing a lot of press on Scotland Today concerning crofters rights. This has me totally confused. If anyone can explain all this to me it would be appreciated.
Cheers

Crofters
Hi Bob,
Take a look at:http://www.crofterscommission.org.uk
Crofting: It's the name given to the small farm tenancy system that goes a long way back in Scottish history.

Crofters
Usualy a croft is a small holding with a bit of grazing land historicaly verging on self sufficiancy.......most times it has a wee house, the crofting system is seen as being a bit archaic in recent years but is a hang over from probably the clearances and other land "reforms".
Most common in the western isles but they are all over the highlands.
A crofter is usualy seen wearing a faded blue boiler suit and doing about 15 other jobs to make a living........

Welcome S. Kerr from Guildford. Your humour is most refreshing.
You need to be aware, though, that the only remaining "croft" on Seil lies empty (though renovation into a decrofted second home is in progress hence the muddy 'footpath' beside the TnT). The registered "crofter" has a home address in Chelsea. True - write to the Crofters Commission in Inverness if you want confirmation. The last true croft on the island was Ardfad; the grandson of the last crofter still lives at Whinbank. Cairnban was crofted in living memory and the (aged) daughter lives in Balvicar.

What a shame!
That's such a shame, though I'd be happy to help him/her out with any outstanding tax issues after I move there.novus ordo seclorum wrote:The registered "crofter" has a home address in Chelsea. True - write to the Crofters Commission in Inverness if you want confirmation.
BTW, I was a little bit disturbed by your reference to a TNT parcel distribution centre. Where is it?
