I heard that the Seil Hall Beechgrove programme was going to be broadcast next Weds (24 June) but don't see any sign of it in my tv mag (Sat Herald). Anybody got more up-to-date info?

Heard yesterday it was now being shown 8th July because of Wimbledon.

(a) Wasn't this a very good advert for Seil? Shouldn't all the movers and shakers be congratulated? Hasn't it provided a great new resource for the island? Aren't the organisers fantastic for taking this initiative and giving Seil some great publicity and a nice new garden?

(b) On the other hand, didn't it appear that almost everyone on Seil is either English or posh? Not that there is anything wrong with that except that everyone isn't English or posh! Is it not all a bit twee for a Scottish highland island? Is it sustainable? Is it desirable? Was it even a small clique misrepresenting the island?

If you have ever been involved in anything involving TV before, you will know how orchestrated it is and edited. My opinion, TV almost always gives a false impression.

If you do want to believe it you might think that the born and bred locals are hiding away and are not as 'community' spirited as the 'incomers'. Which way do you want it?

Apparently one has gone on holiday, the second hasn't been feeling too well for a few weeks, and the third has no interest in gardening.
Has anyone copied the programme? Could they post it here? I missed it because Corrie was on the other side.

Nice try to get a discussion going Mona. Hopefully Smelly's effort will not dampen it.
My opinion is that anything that brings our community together is a good thing. It doesn't matter if we're posh or lower class, British or Scandanavian, we all live on the same few square miles and with our civilisation threatened by bird flu, cjd, y2k, global warming and the 456 we need to get on together.

Remember that they say all publicity is good publicity, and the fact that someone wants to make a film about the area is generally a good reflection on the island. At least I didn't see any hint of it focussing on the social deprivation, lawlessness or racial discrimination so prevalent in the area.

Like I told you, they ruthlessly edit hours of filming down to just 30 minutes. If you were local born and bred you didn't even have a chance to get your 15 seconds of fame.

As an outsider (not English or posh -I hope) who has only lived here for 20 odd years and some of them have been decidedly odd (weatherwise) I would like to add my tuppenceworth to this debate?
The Beechgrove garden project managed to get a number of local voluntary enthusiasts (Posh or not- volunteers are worth a wheen of pressed men) to do a power of work to transform a bit of ground around the new hall into a very presentable scenic area. But Beechgrove and Television - what was their contribution? An appearance before to suggest what had to be done, and a time limit to achieve it. On the actual filming visit they felt that they could not sustain even 30 minutes of air time with the previous herculean efforts of the volunteers, and the continuing progress, but had to hive off to An Cala, Kilbrandon, and Ardmaddy, on the best filming day of the whole caboodle, which may be nice gardens, but were nothing to do with the subject of the programme.
Beechgrove - I have never watched you before - and unless you come back to Seil and redress the balance, I shall pop my clogs before I switch with the remote to your future efforts.
