Highland scenery in movies
Movies: Braveheart or Rob Roy?
I hated Braveheart from the moment the first scenes opened up: I could just tell it wasn't filmed in Scotland (Ireland as it turned out), and from then on the ONLY bit that seemed remotely authentic was the battle of Bannockburn. For me, the fact that it didn't look like Scotland ruined it.
On the otherhand Michael Caton-Jones version of Rob Roy I think, is a brilliant film, totally authentic, the whole romantic idea of Scotland.
Braveheart was a hit worldwide, but Rob Roy unfairly passed into ignominity. I can think of two other films, Kidnapped and Highlander 1 that just about do justice to the Highland scenery. Which other movies can we add to the list?
(Of course Ring of Bright Water, Local Hero.........)

There was a spy/submarine film, wasn't there, took place in Tobermory? One of the scenes was at the old Oban station. Can't remember the name of it, though.
Was it Donald Sutherland?
And what about Morvern Caller (scenes filmed in Kwicksave or however you spell it). I remember the queues outside the bingo shop in Oban when they were casting the extras. I never saw it, I don't think it was rated very highly!
And there was the one filmed down at Lerags way a few years, another wartime film.
The only thing that sticks in my mind was the wildlife which was killed accidentally by the crew trucks which tore up and down that road. A lot of people shifted their domestic animals out while the filming was going on.
Can't remember the name of the one either. My memory's going...

"the ONLY bit that seemed remotely authentic was the battle of Bannockburn"
If memory is to be serving me rights the two main battles scenes in Braveheart are being Stirling Bridge (oops we are forgetting a bridge in movie) og Falkirk. At movie end is warrior poetpish reference to Bannockburn but no battle I thinks. Anyhows, Bannockburn was fought over two days ya?
For me is you funny Scot's accents in your movie films - make me laughs a lot. Liam Neeson is da Irish MacGregor Nei? Mel Gibson is Glasgae ned highlanman.
For whom does the bell tolls
The Makenzie Break
Enigma
Howsay you - Norvege dix points

"I know where i'm going"
"Restless Natives"
One of the James Bond boat chases was filmed out by the Black Isles....
"The last great wilderness".....(only worth watching for Victoria Smurfitt's breasts)
Some other black and white film about making jumpers was filmed on Easdale Island....um...
Is the scene in the "Ring of bright water" when midge gets skelped with the spade not just fantastic......pity it wasn't Gavin "shark murderer "Maxwell geting the spade....

Thought there was a drug problem over there worse than ours! and don't take the moral high ground of learning another language, plenty of us might be in the process of doing the same thing or can even do so already. It's harder for English speaking folk to learn another language because there is hardly the selective pressure to do so...
