How to disagree

There is an interesting article HERE which is very applicable to discussions on internet fora such as this one.

If you can't be bothered reading the article here's a nice graphical summary represented as a pyramid with the most potent forms of argument at the top:

If we all try to stay nearer the top of the pyramid it can only be good for the quality of debate on here.

Thanks for this Nick - it looks to be an excellent way to help keep us all on track. Perhaps we could start a new thread on discussing exactly what an "ass hat" is - I've never heard of one before and the mind boggles. Then again, is it just knickers?

I suppose it's a matter of interpretation. Is calling someone a hat on a donkey really name-calling?

Am I now refuting the central point or responding to tone?

Apologies one and all - enough from me - I'll say no more other than I like the pyramid model and will endeavour to stick to the top segments.
