The Turbines

by nobody
Graceful dancers on the hill
Electrons pumping into houses
Looking up it’s quite a thrill
New view from the House of Trousers

Soaring towers to keep us warm
Keep the sodium burning bright
Make our gadgets all perform
Twinkling, flickering in the light

Some of you have tried to stop it
Luddites, NIMBYs, anti-progress
Claimed its all for Rory’s pocket
But they’re up there nonetheless

See the buses, Lochs and Glens
Climbing out to view the bridge
Peering up through camera lens
To the turbines on the ridge

The bus tour bodies all agree
Our windfarm is a splendid thing
Standing proud for all to see
Whirling blades that lap and fling

But one protests and cries aloud
‘Were you all mad to let this happen?
To desecrate this place so proud,
To soil the space that you grew up in’

‘What could we do?’ a worthy utters
His voice bare holding over grief
The future is controlled by nutters
Our birthright stolen by a thief’

But soft he speaks and no-one hears
As he passes back inside
Into the darkness to drink beers
And choke back broken local pride.
