Burning Time

Ten million years the ferns fell in the seas
Sank in the ooze of the Jurassic’s birth
Sealing carbon deep in time
Apes evolved, came down from trees
Spoke, built machines to mine the earth
Drilled deep in ancient slime
Out it came, was set alight upon the breeze
Ten million years used up in righteous mirth
Enjoyment is our right, no crime
And now the waters rise, the keys
Are sinking and the measurement of worth
Is lost. Buddy, can you spare a dime?
