The time as I write is between three and four
and around me I can clearly hear the sound of silence roar
as im woken from my slumber by my own loved ones snore.

Theres a bird in a bush its song in full flight
unaware, little chap ,its the dead of the night
Fooled into singing by Sodium-light
Making my sleep pattern so very poor as
I listen two hours early to dawns first chorus:

Though I try hard to drift- off all is in vain
for now theres the splatter of soft autumn rain;
stopping me sleeping of course yet again.
Sleepy- eyed to the kitchen I blunder
Too well aware of the distant thunder

A small drink of water and then back to bed
sleepless wakefull insomniac numb
Waited an hour but sleep didn`t come
The thunder subsided--does silence remain?
No. overhead theres the roar of a plane:

When that has died down what a joy to my heart
The rattle of the milkman with his dirty diesel cart.
Astir ,I have no chance of sleeping like a log
Blessed milkys woken up the first of many a dog

Theres the night bus howling past. Oh well, "cant complain"
I`ll go to work as i can`t sleep, by early morning train;
The one that has it in its powerTo shatter silence every hour
For as we all know it wouldnt be right
For peace to prevail even at night.

Go through the day sleep-deprived and numb
In office noisy,half awake, sat twiddling my thumb.
And so some time between three and four
I`ll fall asleep as planned
With laptop silent, coffee-cold and pen, of course in hand.

It reminds me of many nights like this, frustration, exhaustion and the inability to sleep. I enjoyed your poem!
