Time.
‘Time is the passing of events.’
Inwardly, if nothing much is happening,
Time crawls. Outwardly if all crashes,
Time slows too: survival time.
Falling out of outer time, wading through treacly déjà vu,
Inner time can track ahead.
You can catch the pre-echo of
A voice before the words are spoken,
And glimpse, perhaps, what’s about to come to pass.
Life is experienced in the interplay of
Clock-time and inner time, remembering
All the time, that time is self-referential,
Ultimately only a gauge of itself;
For what is a year, an hour, a century?
And so time contradicts the first line, or the last,
And brings us back, or forward, to
The first and last assertion that
‘Time is the passing of events.’
‘Time is the passing of events.’
