System Mac OSX won't work with Epson C82, C84 (work around?)

I use software configured for Mac OS-9. Now, with a new epson C88 installed (which works just fine in OSX), that software won't find/recognize the C88.
THIS IS A NEW PROBLEM: A week ago, when I wished to print from ACT! (see below) a C84 window popped up and printing commenced (on the C88). i.e., the respective drivers seemed to have no trouble until now finding/using the C88. (epson tech support alleges this was impossible, but what do they know?)
I believe I still have the C82 & 84 drivers installed; in fact, the (ACT) software brings up one or both epson windows, accepts the jobs, but then there's a pop-up that says the ( C82 or C84 ) printers are not responding...
Any ideas? Workarounds? I'd hate to have to go out and purchase a C84 just to run that software (e.g., an antique Mac version of ACT!, Visioneer/PaperPort, etc.)
