tis sad but true - some are obviously pursuing further education whilst others are maybe trying to find some useful employ. They should be encouraged to spread their wings a little and not just settle for working in Tesco's or some waitressing job. I have noticed though that they do come back the odd weekend and high holiday times. Bless.... Go to the New Years Ceilidh and youll see what I mean. If I had kids I would want them to broaden their horizons a little. You have to let them go in order for them to come back.
I will look for the good and beauty in everything around me .... carpe diem!

it seems that anyone (academic or not ) can now go on to further education.......so why bother with work and its 30 days holiday-a-year. Why not enjoy a full-time (25 hours/week ) college course, work in the holidays with no tax to pay, AND, if you don't fancy getting up in the morning you don't even have to phone in sick!!!

Why stick around here where there's no easy jobs and the dole money doesn't stretch that far ??!!

Does everyone have to be under personal attack by you for choosing to voice an opinion.

You seem to have a heavy burden on your shoulders......but it's not MY fault you're so down-trodden!

There are no fields here. There are no houses or jobs for the young unless they want to look after us wrinklies. Was there ever jobs for the young here?

Oh yes Batwing. They used to be able to work down a big hole digging slate with a pick and shovel all day.

Those were the days!

8) Hi from NY! Just to commend the young folk for getting away from Seil and going off to roam the planet. That's what life's for - extending your horizons, opening your mind, having fun and experiencing as much as possible. Pity the old timers of yore who had to stay and be slaves to the aristocracy and slate mine-owners. Things are so much better now but some miserable islanders still cling sadly to the past.... :) 8)

This weather is quite, quite awful.

It won't just be the young ones that'll leave if this persists !! :(

Where are all the young folk gone?

Post by canUsmellthat »

A few weeks ago another young (ish) blood left the island in search of further education. He was a local fisherman and seemed to be trying to make a go of it on the island. It's a shame that our youngins don't find the standard of life on the island to be good enough for them to stick around. As the great Gibbon said: "Nothing, it is said, is true but change"

I suppose we just have to sit back and wish them all the best...

That has been the story in the W. Hghlands for several centuries, and is why there have been so many successful Scots engineers, economists, politicians, explorers etc etc.

So many unfulfilled potentials if they had all sayed at home to catch fish. :goldfish
