That remark reminded me of reading the Scalpay News in The Oban Times!!!

HA !! - was speaking to a local at the T + T very recently - has anyone else noticed the silver people-carrier which has been sitting outside the pub ?? - apparently its been sitting there for nearly a week, spoiling all the tourist photo's!!!! - one of the local 'worthies', it seems, hasn't been sober long enough to pick it up!!!

Anyway, there are far more variables to consider than your simplistic model definition of a local. Granted, some anomalies may conform to your definition but I imagine your significance level would be greater the p= 0.05 meaning non significance.

What if one inhabits rented accommodation? If one builds their own house? If one does not even wish to be called a local. Answering one question gives rise to another, the more we answer brings us closer to the truth.

i think you become a local when you join golf club.own your own boat.be in the 5 o"clock club.and use the forum.o yeah and live on seil not just visit once in a while

Seem to me that this is a somewhat elitist attitude why must a local have to own a house? Do you know any locals who didnt buy a house thirty years ago who can afford to buy on the island.......

I think culture has a lot to do with the definition of a "true" local. Old locals have memories of old characters, geography the way it used to be, animals that have declined and are all but gone from the area (Corncrakes e.g.) and anecdotes galore etc etc.

The problem is that there are fewer anecdotes about old local characters being told by fewer locals who remember them. The neo local, through no fault of their own, does not have the culture of the local proper. I suppose we're not much different from a population of aphids...except we have/did have culture.
