Who is in favour of a causeway across Cuan Sound?

As a yachtsman based in Balvicar I certainly am not, but perhaps that is a rather narrow outlook.

I would imagine however that the fishermen based here might also have a point of view . . . and who is to say what the disruption to the tidal flow might do to the purity of the waters round Seil that make our oysters so marketable.

Of course, if I lived on Luing and was restricted by the ferry timetable and stress of weather I might feel differently . . .

Let's hear some opinions and let the powers that be know how we feel.

The Council are commited to investing in the Cuan Sound link in some fashion. From memory the price tags on each are as follows

1) Ferry upgrade and slipways £2-3 Million
2) Causeway or bridge £6-7 Million
3) Causeway with tidal turbines £11 -12 Million

In each of the first two cases there is no revenue generation only ongoing costs paid from the public purse.
At least the third option would more than cover ongoing costs and produce a revenue stream for the local community.
How would the sailors among you feel if the barrier contained a navigable lock system?

you can have a mooring on Luing if this is of any help. save motoring though the cuan sound!!

What Luing needs is a McDonalds (beef offal available on site), a motorway, an out-of town shopping complex at Achafolla, a gay nightclub and nightly fireworks

Only four people have bothered to vote in the poll.

Why?

Do you all think some nasty internet monster will whizz down the wire and get you if you do anything vaguely interactive with your computer?

I despair of you all . . . supposedly an almost totally computer literate island with loads of taxpayers' money spent to give you all a free PC. Broadband is here. Some kind soul has set up a fully functional forum to discuss local issues. And what happens? There's a poll on an important local issue and only four out of over 1000 viewers can be bothered to click a button and vote.

Maybe folk haven't taken part in the poll because a tunnel has been excluded from the list.

I rather fancy a glass one myself; watching all the fish & boat bottoms going by, waving to all the friendly divers etc.

Perhaps the Easdale Island folk would like one too. This fits in nicely with the marine national park proposal for our area. It could increase tourism bringing lots of lovely big coaches whizzing along through our narrow streets.

I'm sure funders will think this a brilliant idea and both tunnels could be in place by 2007.

If we were living in a proper small country like say Norway or Sweden there would already be a tunnel or bridge built and probably some sort of industrial centre perhaps fishing or like Finland the most well known mobile phone manufacturer in Europe!
People on Luing want a fixed link because people still work and live there,and more power to them .

I've added the tunnel option to the poll.

When the post was originally made this hadn't even been mentioned as an option. It is opbviously the best idea of all . . . so long as there is a committment to improving the road at the same time.

So go on everyone, show your support and vote for a tunnel - tell everyone you know on Luing who has internet access.

I used to often fly up the West coast of Norway when I was working offshore. Every little island there is served either by a tunnel, a bridge or a frequent modern ferry service.
