As many "locals" seem to be exiles of one sort or another, maybe they would agree to welcoming one breed to the island. It seems to me when so many complain about the high cost of housing, the ageing population and potholes, they overlook the ideal solution

For too long the travelling folk of the UK have been ignored. Not only do they bring their own homes on tow, but they are generally hard working, young families highly experienced in tarmaccing of drives and potholes. Such an influx would attract greater investment to the area in recognition of the contribution the local community would be making. To my mind the area, dare I say it, caravan park around the Village Hall would be an ideal location with 24hr access to the toilets and community facilities. Overspill could be catered for along by the harbour where there is ample hard standing, and adequate coastal breeze to blow rubbish out of sight inland.

Of course these are not just any old caravans, but double and even triple axled homes on wheels with every modern convenience including bay windows. Roaming dogs and barefoot children gayly playing amongst the yellow "Motorway maintenance" tipper trucks and transit vans, will convey a thriving community to tourists rather than one that is dying under the weight of its own problems. Once established you'll find more tourists and RV's will venture out to Ellenabeich bringing further prosperity for the area. There's a new breed of "vanners", younger and more adventurous than the traditional handlebar moustached Caravan Clubbers who prefer cutting edge Extreme Caravanning. A cross between storm chasers and caravan swingers they seek the hide-aways where they can enjoy their caravans being rocked all night.

So, no fear, Caravans are good for Seil. Low cost accomodation, attracting young families who like a bit of night life.

If you do not like the content of this forum try one closer to home, perhaps the delightfull town of Marple in sunny Cheshire I am sure you will have fun discussing intresting topics such as:
The humps in Hibbert lane! not even pot holes speed bumps....oh the indignity.
Co-op parking sham! oh no the pay and display machines at the co-op don't work.
Mobile phone masts! Aaarg every body in Marple is going to die.
Post office parking! damn people keep parking thier cars in front of the post office.

Or perhaps Ashton-on-@+!££ with its marauding bands of young people..(lucky them) or the new skate park, or people parking thier cars on the heath....yawn.

God it makes this forum seem almost worldly, perhaps I and Elephantseal, minimum,NOS and Ticonderoga should start posting on thier websites.....y'know these people are probably locals so will need our advice on how to live and appreciate what they have!!!

I must say Pentland Pirate does seem to have some deep seated issues that he keeps trying to pass off as humour (and failing badly)

I'm sorry I don't mean to put the locals down. But I do think I can solve some of your problems when I move to the island. Obviously the place needs a few mobile phone masts planted around the place as there is absolutely no signal in the area. I mean it's impossible to chat wi me mates without the things and damned unsociable...gives a clue about the locals. I do think that some of the land I buy should be given over to a caravan site as this must benefit the area. If I can get the extra land a "Park Lands "retirement facility of "park" (low cost small semi-permanent) homes should be a popular idea amongst locals and an influx of retirees as Seil is just the sort of spot they are attracted to...nice and peaceful.

You shouldn't knock those who are willing to invest their own money in making Seil a better place.

I'd rather have the travelling people than you pentland pirate, somehow I think they might be a bit more interesting and less narrow minded. They might even have a better sense of humour (although that wouldn't be hard)

The provocation is working! Nothing I have said, have I meant seriously. At least people are talking and using the forum when they would otherwise have nothing to comment on, or would not comment. I've even succeeded in uniting you against me when so often it seems you cannot agree with each other. Even if the thread starts frivolously it often gets minds working, and suggestions and ideas might start to flow as a result. Even as an outsider I do have an interest in your area. The attempted humour is mine, but at least I try, and the comments I get back from you certainly make me laugh! I can take it! However outside observer might consider many of you are too serious and a touch parochial.

Without being patronising and condescending, why not just treat all of this as banter? For those who don't know what it is:

You shouldn't be so sensitive to it and not take life so seriously.

I'm disappointed that PP's suggestion seems to have been dismissed. I understand that for many years there was a vibrant caravan community at Arfern which has recently fallen foul of the planners. Arfern is a mix of wealthy, less wealthy, tourists, boat owners etc. Many of the "hippies" who moved in years ago have become local small business folk. There's a great annual arts/music festival with residents holding exhibitions in their own homes. A diverse community can be very successful.

I'm up for a caravan park, although I would avoid the planning department. It's my view that they don't understand how to support "community development". Once there's load of 'vans sited we can all have a "sit-in" if the local authority try to remove them. It could unite us all!!

I would also like to draw a distinction between real travellers who traditionally travel round the country working and salvaging scrap and have done somthing simmilar for generations.
And new age travellers like those at Ardfern who travel round avoiding work, being vegitarian, calling thier children badger and free, not washing and driving vehicles that excrete massive amounts of carbon waste......all while living off trust funds that mummy and daddy set up for them!

As an ageing hippy myself should I take offence at this?

Double benefits: bring in the travellers with their own low cost accomodation (caravans). They may be seen as "undesirable" (to some) neighbours, helping de-value local properties and making them more affordable.

Two solutions to two problems often raised on this forum.

Ageing hippies. Generally interesting folk, normally more philosophical and knowledgeable than the norm, with a special approach to testing life on the fringe. As a minority group they may be persecuted by those who do not understand them. Rock on Minimum!

Don't you just love people who use a word and then give you a definition, just in case your vocabulary isn't as vast as their own or you are unable to use a dictionary?
It's also interesting how many peope try to disguise some rather unsavoury opinions with a layer of 'humour' - when the going gets a little rocky they turn around and trot out the "Come on, I was only joking, haven't you got a sense of humour?" escape route.
I'd like to let a traveller view the current exchanges and hear what he has to say regarding whether he finds it harmless banter or somewhat insulting.
Don't think any word definitions are required at this point.

I think your average traveller is more worldly wise and clever enough to recognise when something is just banter. They've suffered more persecution than most and are more than capable of brushing anything aside, whether it be a parking ticket or an obstacle across a field entrance. (is this insulting?)

Inoffensive banter doesn't need one to have an escape route unless the other party simply don't recognise it, because they are so serious.

Is 'banter' something which exists in Seil?
