Jackass penguins. That's what you need on Easdale. Or do I mis -interpret the sentiments in other Forum letters and comments? Am I right to get a sense that some of the population are happy to maintain the "quiet" life believing tourists and their cars and buses are best driven off the islands, but also that another part of the population is keen for ideas that will change the island, bringing a new quality of life?
Personally I'm in favour of welcoming the Jackass penguin to these shores. They're in decline on the coast of South Africa but could be used to bolster the population on Easdale where they would be out of reach of mink. What's wrong with introducing new species? Bears and wolves may be part of the area's history, but introducing penguins might not be any less dangerous to the local balance than a Norwegian, Frenchman or Pakistani settling on the island.

Not sure if you mean Easdale Island, Easdale in general or Seil Island.
I can't speak about Easdale Island as I'm not sure whether Penguins are in vogue out there (personally speaking I think it's a terribly snooty place) but I'm sure the accommodating folk on Seil will accept them, without complaint. We tend to accept anything here (within reason).
Quite fancy a penguin party myself - all dessed up in black and white, chocolate biscuits etc.....

A very astute observation. Although the contributers to this forum make up a very small percentage of Seil's population.
90 % are waiting for their home help or the meals on wheels wagon to roll by....and thats the lucky ones.
So they arn't aware of anything other than their bowel movements or if Dr Hannah has run out of Fibogell.
(ps: when I say "non-indigenous species" I mean animals not other nationalitys!!!!!!!!!)
Who's up for a land grab? theres a few acres at Ardencaple lying fallow, i'll get a Hymac and we can biuld a wind farm there.......its agriculture but not as we know it!,just think all that extra cash we could build a new village hall!a cycle path! .......become autonimous and .............have a new bridge thats actualy designed to carry traffic and not a horse and a bag of turnips.
Even better ask T.Blair to choose us as the new home for Britains next generation of fast breed reactors we'll be rich i tells you!!
Thats the kind of change we need!
ps:I was only joking about the fast breed reactor.

Seil already has a fast breed reactor - my missus - actually, come to think of it, she's a fast breeding over reactor.

And as someone who lived six miles downwind of Dounreay for 17 years I can tell you you'll get:
1) Spotless roads tarmacced every year. Not a pothole in sight.
2) Brand new and affordable homes for everyone
3) An influx of a wide variety of young professional workers
4) Jobs for the locals.
5) Wealth and prosperity for all.
6) Bridges
7) Millions of £'s to improve the environmental habitat and wildlife
Just what you want, or is it?

Sounds good to me, or perhaps we should bulldoze Seil completly flat and sell it all off as prime shoreside real estate.Y'know like in Florida......
A few million pound condo's here a 3000 bedroom Hotel there, demolish the Bridge and re-biuld it inside the foyer of the Seil Hilton........
Perhaps Easdale Island could be a Gated community for all the Nearly Deads.I think Balvicar would be the ideal place for a casino(better than Ibrox anyway)..............
