New 30mph zone.

Post by Tony the Toad »

Could someone please explain why the introduction of the 30mph zone applies to the north of the island only? You either apply it to the whole island or not at all. Folk will just be speeding down the Balvicar straight and Cuan and Ellenabeich roads worse than ever, after being ‘slowed down’ at the top end. Either that or, in their usual rush to catch the ferry, they’ll ignore it altogether. Also, when will some people learn to use passing places, rather than just barging on like they own the road?

At least our signs are fairly low key compared to the monster ones at Kilmore - this in addition to all the recent landscaping - someone up there in cahoots with the local councillor?

Couldn't agree more with you Tony. An islandwide 30mph limit would not cause any serious disruption to those travelling to and from the ferries.

(Somebody can do the maths for the differences in timings at various speeds!)

What I'm not looking forward to are the six warning signs that will have to be erected before Clachan Bridge and after the present 30 sign at the end of the village. OTT!

With a reduced speed limit island wide it would benefit all walkers, runners and cyclists. Enjoy!

Tony..I agree with you completely, there have been many incidents [some unreported] of accidents locally. OK, none too serious I admit but it's a good idea to have the whole island 30mph. If the folk on Luing are rushing to work..then set your alarm for 10 mins earlier..

Yes Tony, I agree with you, in particular about the ignorant folk who ingore passing places and blunderbus their way onwards at 20mph and would continue to hog the road in this was all the way into Oban if they got half a chance, then they look at you horrified when you have to make a rush for it in a suitable passing place.
Hello, that is what a passing place is for.
Most of these people seem to drive in the middle of the road as well, another sign of their arrogance

Both actually, certainly a complete state of oblivion to the fact that there is even onother vehicle behind them, or if they do notice, they sometimes deliberately keep you blocked from getting by.

There is absolutely no point in having a speed limit unless it is going to be policed. And what chance is there of that? Responsible and considerable drivers will always proceed at a reasonable speed, idiots will do whatever they like. All you are going to do is blight the island with ugly signposts that dazzle you when you use full beam to find your way home on a dark night.

Well PP..as one who is not out on a 'dark night' I cannot see the problems of the new signs. Tourists are too busy looking at the scenery, going slowly most of the time anyway...It's a good thing I think..30mph..

What is a 'reasonable' speed for Seil?

Good grief PP, for once I agree with you. The dazzle factor of unnecessary or over-large road signs is outrageous these days.

I don't recall hearing of any incidents / accidents, certainly none where speed was a factor, either on Seil or in the new 40mph zone at Kilmore. This may of course be simply because I am poorly informed. There must be some safety concerns and statistcal evidence though, councils cannot arbitrarily reduce speed limits without cause. It is of course utterly inconceivable that the local traffic authority are not following the guidelines enclosed here: http://www.scotland.gov.uk/Publications ... 14134225/4.

The new speed limit is a damnable nuisance, so is the one at Kilmore...
