Seil Bid for St Ayles Build

There are moves afoot on the Isle of Seil to become involved in the Scottish Coastal Rowing movement. The Island, about 15 miles south of Oban, is surrounded by some of the best water around our coasts for the sort of rowing that we do, with miles of relatively flat water in the shelter of Seil and Luing and lumpy stuff when wanted on the Atlantic sided of the Island in the Firth of Lorne. Indeed it would be perfect water for any skiffies wanting to take part in the cruising log competition, and your Convenor had a fantastic trip doing an 11 mile circumnavigation of the Island under sail and oar recently.

However, back to the point, do you think that “The Isle of Seil” should be part of all this? Would you like to help build a St Ayles skiff for the Isle of Seil and / or help to crew it? If so you are warmly invited to an open meeting at 7.30 on Wednesday 16th May in Seil Hall. It is hoped that the project will involve all of Seil, with the need for teamwork building, fundraising, rowing and organising of all ages and skills.

I think it's a grteat idea!!! Ullapool has been doing it for a wee while now (http://ullcoastrow.wordpress.com/) and they're off to the Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant with their skiff "Ulla"...Next year Ullapool will be hosting the World Skiff championship (http://intheboatshed.net/2012/04/12/st- ... july-2013/), will Seil be joing in???

I can't make the meeting, sadly, as I move to Seil in June ... a friend in Ullapool is one of the 'Ladies Who Launch' as featured on the radio last summer (in conjunction with the Tall Ships' race) ...

There was a great turnout at the meeting and there is obviously the talent and enthusiasm to take this project forward. If the momentum is maintained Seil could even have a skiff built and in the water later this year. Watch this space for links to more information as things develop.

This will act as an information centre for the project. Not much to see there at the moment but worth bookmarking if you are interested.

Details on how to buy a share should appear on there shortly.

A really exciting idea. I'll be volunteering to row.

A few initial questions:
1. You can buy the full kit from Jordan Boats for £1,340 http://scottishcoastalrowing.org/about-the-kit/ why are you trying to raise £3,940 (£60x64) ? Where will the excess £2,600 go ?
2. Who will own the boat ? The shareholders ? Who will then be liable for accidents/insurance etc.

I would also like clarification on the points raised about costs mentioned in the last entry - is this expenses for the boys?
While not denying that there are people who enjoy a bit of rowing, around our shores,there are probably enough small dinghies to accommodate the entire population, if it came to an evacuation, yet seldom are they seen actually out on the surface of the water.
However, if the drive behind this scheme is competition, in racing or whatever, then this is a whole new scenario.
We already have a darts league, bowls league, shinty, and football league, so if a skiff league would fill a vacant slot, then blessings on your efforts, and try to keep Seil out of the relegation zone .

In response to your first question re the cost - the full kit of £1,340 from Jordan boats only includes the following:
"The basic kit from Jordan Boats comprises:

•A set of plans
•The planking, bulkheads, and seat tops, CNC cut in Lloyds Type Approved Marine Plywood
•The moulds over which the boat is built, CNC cut from WBP Plywood
•patterns for shaping the stems "

see the website as you quoted for this information - it DOES NOT include the following:

"The Timber for the gunwales, keel and seats will be available as packs separately from timber suppliers who will have the cutting list. Jordan Boats will not be selling these directly.

The paint for the boat will also be purchased separately, as this will be required much later in the build. We strongly recommend that Marine Paints are used – they are more expensive, but properly applied, they do the job they are designed to do."

In addition Maggie - either you need a new battery for your calculator, or your mental math is not as good as you think it is - 64 x 60 = £3,840 not your suggested 3,940.

The amount of money aiming to be raised has come about using the North Berwick scheme as a template or guideline. They raised this amount to cover the costs involved in their boat. (As it is not simply £1,340 required as pointed out above)

Any excess money will be used for future costs involved with the boat - although it is not forecasted that there will be any great excess of funds left - and any future funding would be done with further fundraising efforts - a regatta for example?!



Trust this information proves valuable to both Maggie and JimCee - And for any other person reading, that may be concerned with the accounting information! certainly no expenses for boys!!

Over half the shares are now sold, the kit has been purchased and is on the island. More on the Seil Skiff website.

Anyone else fed up hearing about this posh project for rich alien folk? Shares with no point, Anglified nonsense with no historical connections to Seil (personal insults deleted by administrator)?

hmm, a project that involves the old skill of boat building (even if only using a kit), that will provide an activity for people of all ages regardless of whether they can afford to contribute financially to the project or not, plus will strengthen links with other local communities ..... if you want to blame that on incomers then go ahead!

Good luck to everyone involved. Having seen what a great sport and community activity skiff racing is on the Scilly isles then I look forward to seeing it blossom here as well. (No doubt I will get shot down by Mona for daring to mention some english islands and compare them to scottish ones!)

It is largely aimed at young folk living on Seil and has been very successful in over 30 other Scottish communities. The St Ayles Skiff was commissioned by Anstruther Fisheries Museum and designed by Ian Oughtred, a renowned small boat designer based on Skye. The kits are made by Jordan Boats in Kircaldy. Nothing at all 'anglified' or 'posh' about it, this is a totally Scottish concept. Over 30 residents have seen fit to contribute so far with no personal reward simply because they think it is a great community project.

Out of order, oh moaning one. You may be too tight-fisted to contribute, but no need to knock it.

As for the personal insults - yellow card. You know the forum rules.
