Deric and Pantyland concur that the explanation which I gave for the overwash problem at the time of “King Tides” on Funafuti (the main island of Tuvalu) as being the damage the locals have caused to the previously protective reefs is, in their words: "total pish"
Maybe PISH stands for “Perhaps I Smell Heresy” ie the heresy of daring to doubt so called evidence of global warming.
At the risk of being burnt at the stake I should also mention that Funafuti is a coral island which, at its highest point, is a mere 460 cm above MSL and that coral, as well as being incredibly porous, is remarkably fragile.
Traditional life was made possible there by building simple, wood and palm, structures which could be easily replaced after an overwash event and which did not damage the coral foundation of the island.
In the last twenty years these have been replaced by large (and heavy) tourist hotels and a concrete runway (taking 20% of the land area of Funafati) has been built. It doesn’t take much to work out the compression effect this has had on the coral basis of the island.
The islanders have now recognised the catastrophic effect which dynamite fishing has had on the protective reefs and it was banned a couple of years ago. However the Prime Minister (Filoimea Telito) has also recognised our gullibility and is demanding millions of dollars from us to compensate for the more frequent overwash events, using Al Goretrex guff to justify his demands.
My point is that we should never take the dramatic global warming pronouncements thrown at us by the Goretex brigade at face value. A little thought and they prove to be either exaggerations or downright untruths.
Ecofascists and technonerds have given us all sorts of apocalyptic scares in the last few years and all have proved to be false eg Millenium Bug, Bird Flu, CjD/BSE. Global Warming, however, is their triumph because the media just love it; scarcely a week goes by without a huge front page scare in The Independent or The Gruniard. ITV regularly send a film crew to the Antarctic in the southern summer to film thawing ice and BBC claim that the NW Passage is navigable for the first time since Frobisher reported it icebound in 1576 (as temperatures were crashing again at the end of the Medieval Warm Period!)
Word of the day is eclectic.

Is that because you don't understand what Longshanks has said, don't agree with what they said, or are you unwell?

All of these could have been a major problem. The difference is that Man saw the threat and took action to prevent/restrict them. Now Man has seen a threat from Global warming and at least some people have decided to do what they can to minimise or eliminate the threat.

Longshanks don't you think the scientists have the means to establish if it is the low lying islands of the Pacific and the Indian Ocean that are sinking or that it is the water level that is rising? Are all the world's fishermen to blame for all the land masses sinking? How does a Longshank explain the world's ice masses shrinking?

Pentlamb says;
"How does a Longshank explain the world's ice masses shrinking?"
1. Who says they are shrinking?
2. A little bit of research will tell you that as many glaciers (worldwide) are advancing as are retreating (as one would naturally expect on a dynamic planet).
The warmists sometimetimes point to Mt Kilimanjaro's shrinking snow cover as proof of CO2 warming. A little proper understandanding of what is happening in the Usumbara Mountains would lead you to understand that for thirty or more years the Chaga people of that area of Tanzania have been busily deforestng so as to grow more coffee on their shambas.
This has led to a decrease in rainfall and, hence, the depletion of Kilimanjaro's snowcap. Asante Sana!
CanineSmell exclaims:

after the light dawns on him about the ecofascist Tuvalu scam.
Don't worry, I felt like that too when I first realised the extent of the misinformation being fed to us. I know how you feel CanU. Stay real, avoid the geeks and don't buy any of those so called energy efficient light bulbs; yet another stealth tax excused by the global warming scam.
Good to have you on board.

Oh no they're not . . .

as many glaciers (worldwide) are advancing as are retreating
Simply not true I am afraid Shanky . . .

Glacier retreat is in fact an essentially global phenomenon, with only a few isolated (and well understood) counter-examples, such as western Norway. The figure below shows an example from WGMS, as published in the 2001 IPCC report.

Swarm (or whichever of his multiple aliases he wants to go by) states confidently:
"as published in the 2001 IPCC report. "
which has ben totally discredited not least by its use of the delinquent hockey stick graph which totally ignores the Medieval Warm Period and its authors' subsequent admission that the ten warmest years were in fact in the 1930's!
So to use the glacier graph is suspect. Close examination shows that what appears to be a decline in ice cover actually coincides with the end of the victorian mini ice age; not surprising eh? and hardly caused by our build up of CO2. Further a glance at the very limited sample (20 out of over 3,500 glaciers worldwide - pretty scientific what!) tells us that 35% are advancing.
Must go for a longshank.

the future on seil

Post by canUsmellthat »

I guess more houses, less people living here who grew up here, the north end'll join to the mainland sooner or later and we'll all be recycling like the good little citizens we really are...

Perhaps one time we'll all have a night at the tnt (or wooly) and we can all go wearing our user names pinned to our tops. PP could be introduced, in person, to Seventh and longshanks could find out who those multiple aliases are for definite...maybe not…

Thank you CanU.............but I think anonymity is a good thing on this site. In the community there will be underlying tensions and many people will bite their lower lip rather than say what they really think in a face to face situation. Here they can get things off their chest without it normally causing too much offence. I mean, can you see Longshanks and herby Dice having a nice quiet conversation about Global Warming in the TnT?

Whilst it would be great to match up the Seil Chat persona with the real individual, guessing who on earth it is that makes such outrageous comments is part of the mystery and fun of joining in this site. :D

Nope, I'm still in agreement with Spiderman - we've got a lot to look forward to.

Any treehuggers out there care to explain why global average temperatures are now falling? The (discredited) IPCC hockey stick graph showed a steady rise over time - no falls! Oh dear, what's gone wrong. Are we not doomed after all?
Oh yeah - any one reckon that the newest contributor (who, bizarrely, goes by an email address) is barking mad?

Well, here we are not ten but fifteen years down the line and scientists have delivered a 'final warning' on the climate crisis, as rising greenhouse gas emissions push the world to the brink of irrevocable damage that only swift and drastic action can avert :sigh
