Gavin Maxwell et al...
I decided to do some reading about Gavin Maxwell et al because I know nothing 'cept the film Ring O... Anyway, Seventh hates him that much is clear but he (Maxwell) lead, by all accounts, an amazing life. He even had a sub-species of Iraqi otter named after him: Lutrogale perspicillata maxwelli.
Terry Nutkins seems pretty uninteresting 'cept for the fact that he got some digits removed by an angry otter.
Look up:

The basking shark fishery, that 7th refers to, is a mar in the rest of Maxwell's life doings but I'm sure they were all at it back then...

Does wikepedia also tell you he couldn't "cope" with relations with the female of the species.....and that he liked his mother in a Bates Motel kinda way(very similar to Fraser Darling another pseudo enviromentalist).
Any way when you have read Isles of the West, read the sequel....Isles of the North...its not as good but opens your eyes to how Norway make us look like a bunch of amateurs.......

Reply to seventh...
It does tell you about his homosexuality but not about his relationship with his mother; was he jealous of his father in a Freud kind of way?
These Isles books sound like they'll really sort my life out. Why doesn't the whole island read them and then live life in harmony, getting as much from our existence as possible and then even accepting poor moonracketeer as an equal and not the slight of intellect individual that he/she is…
But seriously, what’s so special about these stinking books? I could quote books like Sophie’s world, The story of life or even Captain Corelli's Mandolin. Does this mean that we’re at a stalemate now?
Fire some proper ammunition at me, don’t just show me the cases…

I mentioned Isles of the West specifically because it seemed very relevant to criticisms and remarks about the RSPB made in this thread.what’s so special about these stinking books?
Ian Mitchell's book is not a utopian vision of island life, as you would realise if you had been paying any attention . . .
Something like 14% of Scotland is owned by quangos with no accountability, and Ian Mitchell has a look at most of them in the course of his sail round the Hebrides (he lives on Islay, btw)
The RSPB came out looking the least attractive, but he also asks some pertinent questions re. the National Trust, Historic Scotland, the John Muir Trust and similar bodies.
As far as I am aware there has not been a scratch and sniff edition produced yet.

Need there be one!
Following your last link, I found myself looking into the eyes of something beginning with diesel, the most recent link was more useful and the reviews helped out, thanks!
I'm sorry I wasn't paying attention in class when we were told the book isn’t a utopian vision of island life…wait when did we hear that? And if the initial mention of the book was to point out that the RSPB are a group of incompetents, I know that already…I have first hand knowledge of this! As far as other NGO’s go, yes I know they also mess up sometimes.
Let he who is without sin cast the first stone…
There are crappies belonging to any group of people: land owners, NGO’s, farmers, fishermen, forum users etc etc we don’t need Ian Mitchell to show us this…or do some folk need the security that they’re not the only ones…
Why don’t we do away with all conservation NGO’s and turn all the land back to agriculture…give the EU more to throw away at the end of the year. Under this model there’d be hell to endure when the rise of the veggie and vegan is properly realised!

I am confused. Can someone repost the original link Nick gave, as I am very keen ton understand the role diesel mechanics have played in the devastation of quangos (some kind of zebra, apparently) in the western isles at the hands of Gavin Maxwell and his marauding band of hegehogs of divergent sexuality.

Where's Seventh?
Is Seventh working in an otter sanctuary somewhere? I want to know about Gavin Maxwell, I heard he was a lovely bloke and a top environmentalist!
