Sewage (again!)

Post by NickB »

.
From the December Seileachan: (now available online)
Scottish Water continue to work on their improvements to the local sewage system. Once work is completed, a tanker is expected approximately every 15 days to remove sludge.
I don't recall this being part of the original plan, so I guess we can assume that Scottish Water has now given up trying to make this 'state of the art' scheme work as originally attended, and is now reduced to trucking our night soil off-island.

Wonderful.

I'm no expert on this topic but isn't production and removal of sludge (biosolids) a normal feature of sewage treatment and isn't this preferable to direct release of sewage to the sea and to multiple tanker collections from everyone's septic tanks?

Yes, you are right Mona. I'm a bit surprised that it will require a tanker every two weeks though.

I tend to agree with you Nick.

If a tanker is required every fortnight that seems to be a lot of sludge that is being created!!

I never realised the island had such a large population !!

Perhaps the system is not as functional as was first suggested by Scottish Water

Indeed it just sounds like another Scottish Water waste improvement plan gone wrong !

And the final irony - if the work has finally been signed off then we can expect to pay a lot more in sewerage charges than we previously paid with a septic tank installation

Please let's stop whining! Especially about stuff we know little about. Think positive - the Sound is getting cleaner and we don't have to pay thousands to replace septic tanks or regular smaller fees to empty septic tanks. I still think this place has too many dinosaurs moaning about change and progress. In the last few years, we've got a better road, new fresh water pipes and supply and a sewage treatment system just better than that in Ancient Rome & worthy of Victorian England. Wow! Enjoy! Be grateful! ;)

Which just goes to show that weed gets you through times of no money better than money gets you through times of no weed.
