According to an article on the BBC website street lights are to be switched off across the Western Isles to help the islands' local authority save money and reduce CO2 emissions. Comhairle nan Eilean Siar said the move followed feedback from communities and was in line with similar schemes run by other councils. Streets lights are already operated on reduced hours on Lewis, though parts of Stornoway remain lit all night. Highland Council has also sought to cut costs by turning off street lamps
So - what about Argyll and Bute? Should we switch off the sodium glow in Ellenabeich and Cnoc-A-Challtuinn and let the dark back in? Works fine in Balvicar.

Why not? we can buy a little 'wind up' torch if we need to venture out at night. Very good they are too...
Re: Let's have Dark Skies
I was brought up in a rural community in a village where the street lights were switched off at midnight and nobody had any complaints with that. It would certainly help to bring back dark skies as well as conserving energy and reducing council expenditure. Such a move would certainly have my backing.

I don't know anybody in Ellenabeich who wanted the street lights in the first place!

Must be a first - universal approval of the motion.
Surely somewhere out there must think it's a bad idea, and all sorts of dire things will happen if Seil goes dark at midnight - not that I am trying to stir it up - a torch is just part of life for we who live out in the sticks
