Had a look on the web site..... found this wee gem.

Is the last sentence a mission statement........

While I suspect that the group can be regarded by some as being a bit too pushy and overactive, I also believe it makes a very positive contribution to the intellectual mix on Seil and to environmental awareness. I am not a member of the SNHG and have no wish to join its anorak army but I do defend its right to exist and to flourish here. And, from that point of view, I'm more than happy for it to represent us Seileachans in providing some intelligent ecological balance. KAPPOOOOOW! What's your point, 7th? Are you just showing your usual chip-on-shoulder?

I'm a member of the "anorak army" and proud of it.

I've learned a lot about our local natural heritagefrom attending some of the meetings and walks. In turn this has increased my appreciation of our environment and made me realise just how lucky I am to live here.

I'm sure there are plenty who have benefitted from the diverse range of talks of natural history in the area however..
I think what Seventh was referrring to is that we have yet another unelected body claiming rightly or wrongly to represent us. When SNHG choose to get involved in 'politicking' you have to remember they have no mandate to speak on Seil's behalf and their options do not neccesarily reflect the view of all those on the island..or elsewhere.

I think you'll find the SNHG speak on behalf of SNHG, a perfectly respectable group, that most would say of, "good on them". At least they try to contribute and project the area in a positive light. I suspect that the balance of opinion would frown on those who have nothing better to do than than pick holes in every type of community effort like this. Hang your head in shame Eric and Seventh.

If you took the time to read what I said I haven't anything against the SNHG

..it's the extending the sphere of influence bit that bothers me - Why?...and to what end?

The origins of this thread, it seems to me, hangs upon the interpretation given to the phrase ‘extend its sphere of influence’. Bearing in mind that this phrase relates to the preceding mention of establishing links with ‘media outlets’ it simply means, on my interpretation, that the SNHG group and its aims now have the potential to become known to more people.

In this way, by kicking off this thread, Seventhseil has also helped the SNHG to extend its sphere of influence .

Further to this the main protagonist of SNHG is involved in a new enviromental "Umbrella group" called LEAF involving those who were developing the MNP.

What on earth is the problem?
SNHG is merely a group of locals who love the environment here and get together regularly to explore and enhance their knowledge. Good for them. I see absolutely no indication that they believe that they represent the rest of us. They just have a peaceful and worthwhile pastime.

is a work of art, probably the best on the island, and it shows Seil in a very positive sight to prospective tourists (our lifeblood).

This is a new umbrella organisation encompassing all environmental issues and groups within the Lorn area. Initial member groups range from Sustainable Oban, the local Scottish Wildlife Trust group, through to the Hebridean Partnership, Scottish Centre for Geopoetics, Seil Natural History Group and some of the Fisherman’s Representatives.

The purpose of the forum is to create a voice on the West Coast of Scotland, representing those who support management of the natural environment in ways that favour long-term sustainability on land and sea.

Good to see the fishermen are represented.

Perhaps someone can elighten me - all I can find about this is "the meeting was also attended by some fishermen’s representatives" - Hardly constitutes fully paid up membership?

Just to be clear there is no personal aspect to what I am saying. The word is that the SNHG and LEAF are trying to gain support for what will eventually be a Marine Park by another name, my point was the same groups that were involved in the instigation of a marine park are involved in this. This suggests that the SNHG is not just trying to gain added membership to show people our wild life, but actually want to represent "Seil". As we have dodged the bullet of the MNP once it seems daft that we will have to fight it again.
