Erm Teddy, distilling isn't exactly legal - I doubt if any unknown local distillers want to become known.

If you mean legal distilleries though then I have always thought our own Oban 14 year old is one of the top malts, but it is not as well known as some, so that's my vote.

At last I've been waiting for ages for a topic to come up which interests me. I agree with Admin (NickB as was I take it?) Oban whiskey s my favourite. I can't wait to try the new English whiskey Apparently its really excellent but can you get it round here. No ! I asked the barman at the Tigh Na Truish a few weeks ago, the short one with glasses and he asked the boss and the answer was they will get it in as soon as they can as they'd heard that its very good. He said its made in Norfolk that's where you come from Mr Admin isnt it. You should get the first nip. Cant wait.

Pendant, me? Perhaps....... but it makes my blood boil to hear all the pseudo whisky experts pontificate and extol the virtues of their own particular favourite malt but they can't even spell whisky

C'mon Erik. Some folks like whiskey, some like whisky. They're as entitled to their own view as much as their own taste, and the Irish might give you a lesson in who brewed and named the stuff first...so who decides the correct way to spell it? You can't say which is best because like for like comparison is futile, each one being 'designed' to be distinctive.

As for 'best' are we trying to establish the best one to pontificate about it's aromas, hints and herbs and wotsits or best for getting hammered on a Friday night at the least expense and with the most painfree side effects?

Thanks to those who have helped
not a subject I`m deeply into however I was asked to make a suggestion for
something different for a group of friends at an event yet in the planning stage.

As for serious drinking I personally dont anymore since it became a problem/nearly an addiction
whilst in the army a few(more than a few) years ago.

No I`m not an alchoholic but I could have become one

I still enjoy beer and Whine, as Eric would put it but dont generally know anything about shorts.

Well, to help you Khartoum, I'm partial to Highland Park, Lagavulin, Old Pulteney and Clynelish if I see them on the shelf at an acceptable price. Being at the lower end of the pricing range for malts I feel Old Pulteney could be more widely recognised. It's not local as such but at least it's Scots...or should it be Scotch? Whiskey is Irish so whisky must be Scotch?

Well, I've always been partial to Bunnahabhain. Isle of Jura Superstition is rather nice, too, though.

I like Laphroaig and indeed all of the Islay malts. (For good value, Black Bottle, is a great mix of these.) From Speyside, Glenlivet and Glenmorangie are hard to beat. But, for a local malt, Oban is smooth and excellent too and probably deserves the wider promotion that KT seeks.

Fair point, Eric, you're dead right. My mistake. Glenfarclas is also a lovely wee malt from a family business.

Mrs Kerr and I usually get in a bottle of Glen Tesco for our New Year. Actually, it lasts quite well too. We had some people round recently and it still tastes as good as ever even although it's almost a year since we opened it.

Personally I'm a great fan of Scotch and Coke. One part malt, seven parts coke, two large chunks of ice and a slice of lemon (or lime sometimes).

It is a little known fact that most Speyside malts go best with Morrison's own brand cola - I always pick up a supply when passing through Fort William. For Talisker or one of Islay's finest though the only mixer a true afficonado would countenance is Irn Bru.

Personally, I prefer a "Harricane", comprising 2/10 Malt Whisky, 3/10 Dry Sherry in a tumbler with ice and finished with 5/10 Ginger Ale. It's nice by a log fire on a day like today and best with a good Highland malt like Glenmorangie.
