While we are at it perhaps we should get rid of the National Parks and abolish the SNH, NTS, Historic Scotland, the RSPB and a few other quangoids.

I'm afraid we slept walked in to the Easdale village conservation area it is a disgrace its supposed to represent the working history of the slate islands but the monstrosity that's taken over the square is straight out of Eurodisneys Thunder Mountain. Its shoddy, falling to bits and represents none of the thousands of men and woman that slaved for the Breadalbanes, 'roofing the world'.The square used to be full of buses people, haphazard parking, petrol pumps, a decent tearoom post office and two shops. It was full of children especially in the summer in short it was full of life. Now its an ornate traffic island.

The pier is gated or supposed to be and difficult to get on to, because its suddenly unsafe council are itching to charge for the use of the pier but theirs no water, cant have fuel tanks seen because it is an area. What should happen is that the old wooden pier be knocked down and a pontoon put in its place, the quarry mouth deepened and moorings and pontoons put inside you'd have year round shelter and plenty of water under you and of course Easdale Island should have a big rope tied round it and towed out to sea far away so it can become a real island but you know none of this will happen because its a conservation area.

You get the community you deserve,if you want falling numbers of young people living in the area you've got it, if you want an ageing population whose only worry is falling house values you've got it, if you want an area where every planning application is objected to by every commercial denialist and white flight ist on the island you've got it,if you want to live on an island where elderly woman cant walk the highway without getting verbally abused you've got it . Wow what nonsensical rant

Dubhsgeir - from what you say, you seem to resent the current local owners/ tenants of this little village. It would seem apparent that you couldn't afford one of the houses - that's not our fault! You must be "local" somewhere else.

Tourists at Highland Arts like to look over to see the crane and reflect on how it's stood there for hundreds of years and be able to walk through the village on raised pavements without being hit by some reckless driver.

Calm yourself down and get yourself a pint of Speckled Hen in the Woolpack ( remember not to park in front of the door! )

Um Sally the crane has been there for maybe 10 years, before that it was on the old wooden pier being spammed on by seagulls. So you obviously havn't been there for a very long time......As for the " you obviously cant afford to live there" comment, are you really that stupid, insensitive and ignorant.
As for the rest of Dubhsgier's, rant its all true......unfortunatly.

Sad fact of life is now that unless you earn really good money or inherit a house anywhere decent you will have difficulty living there.Estate agents are by definition avaricious as are property sellers by nature .
Very few the idealists who would sell their property for a lower bid just because someone was born in the area or needed better quality low cost housing we live in a small vastly overpopulated group of islands and sadly have to accept some of the crap that goes with it.
Have you ever been back anywhere and found it better than you remember if youve any affinity with the area.

I don't have statistics, but I would be surprised if Seil's population is currently at an all-time historical high.

Easdale Island may be 'vastly overpopulated' but in general there has been a steady exodus and decline in the population in Argyll and the Islands for hundreds of years, reaching a nadir in the mid-sixties.

Since then there has been an influx of new blood seeking a better quality of life. Generally in the W Highlands they have been very well received. The incomers sometimes bring with them a pace of life and desire to get involved that may grate on some residents' nerves but which gradually fades as the West Coast 'manana' lifestyle takes hold.

With no new blood how many people would now be living on Seil? Six or eight families perhaps, mostly aging with their children headed for the cities.

OK, some immigrants are a bit annoying. There are two sorts.

Firstly there are those who want to freeze the place at the moment in time they arrived - perfect now, any change is bad, no more development.

Then there are those who are the opposite, who want to change everything so it is like the place they have just come from. These latter are the ones who campaign for street lights and traffic lights on the bridge.

There are many though who come here and simply fit in and make friends - with old and new residents alike. Seil is not a time warp - it is in a state of change like everywhere else on the planet, and if you can't deal with that then you have a problem that is I am afraid not going to go away.

Now stop whinging everyone and start living a little - Summer is here in case you haven't noticed, enjoy it while it lasts.
