Split the forum

Noting the way this Forum has developed in recent times, now might be an opportune moment to consider splitting it into two distinct sections.
One section could be
a. for those who like to spend a large amount of their time exchanging vacuous chit-chat.
b. for those who unswervingly believe that they have an incredible sense of humour and that all their witticisms deserve a public airing at every opportunity.
c. for those who wish that Scotland was really England.

That should accommodate 80% of the current contributors and allow them to continue their postings undisturbed.

A second section could be established to allow discussion of local and national issues, etc. It could be used by those that have the ability to exchange points of view and develop ideas minus the distraction of mindless dross.

Ticonderoga, The general thrust of your message is absolutely spot on. I fear that the overwhelming majority of Seil Chat members who initially joined up optimistically have long since abandoned this particularly sad and unrepresentative virtual community. Seil is so much better than this - it's a great shame that those reading the blog from afar are getting some strange bitter and twisted view of the community here. It's certainly not your fault, Nick - I'm sure it's a disappointment to you too. I'm afraid it's all a dead duck.

I don't agree Spidey. I derive considerable amusement from some of the posts on here and also feel that in a sometimes rather roundabout way some important issues are getting a brief airing.

A few of the original posters have disappeared, true - the rough and tumble might have been a bit too much - but this is quite civilised when contrasted with some internet fora. And who knows - perhaps some of them are or will be back with shiny new identities.

A bit early to write it off IMO. Are you sure you are not suffering from SAD?

Most will agree that when life is taken too seriously it tends to be dull. So you can have it 'serious' and that is OK, but when it gets too serious it is only right it is balanced with some humour.

I think the site is a brilliant reflection on the community. Some of the more serious may shy away from the site in exactly the same way they may not be found laughing and joking in the pub. Some folk want to forget the serious side of life and just have a laugh and a joke. This is the wonderful make up of life.

If a thread on this site goes off topic with some silly banter it doesn't prevent some serious biddy from coming back with their serious point.

The site is self balancing and largely self disciplined.......with only the occasional step out of line. Much like the odd tiff you'll find down the pub. Don't split it.

Might just as well split it into one forum each, that way nobody needs to read anyone else's posts and nobody gets offended. Although I do sometimes go too far and have to censure myself in moderately graphic terms so I had better not have one of my own unless someone is willing to moderate it for me.

Life is sometimes serious, sometimes just a bit of a giggle. Is this forum meant to be some kind of community, a place for exchange of ideas, opinions, problems, solutions, observations, remarks, and very poor jokes, somewhere to solve the problems of the world, or is it supposed to just be a place where we can all drone on and on and on about the state of our roads? Hint - it should be none and all those things.

In my little opinion, humble as anything though it be.
