Is there any point in Gaelic signs?

Do we really need signs in Gaelic? I'm all in favour of retaining what we can of the language, but is changing every road sign and marking at
considerable cost really worth it? Were there ever any road signs in Gaelic in the old days? Or was it taken for granted that if you had the means to afford a motor car and drive it intelligently then you had the
means to understand English?

Does ARAF on the road really have any effect on the motorist in Wales (not sure what the equivalent is in Gaelic)?

Why should it become mandatory to have bi-lingual signs if it is not mandatory to be able to speak both languages? And why Gaelic on top? Surely English is the first language?

And don't you just feel there are far too may damned signs spoiling our countryside anyhow? Perhaps when everyone has Satnav we can ditch them all.

Despite the attentions of Cumberland, sheep loving clan chiefs and an anglocentric education system we've held on to Gaelic just, since 1746 we we rent allowed to have Gaelic signage and now i like it fine A+B have wasted more money on less ,don't think there`s any speakers left on Seil but there's some on Luing,a handful, maybe this is an argument against signage,and we might never get Gaelic back to postwar levels but we cant just let it go and if the signs end up being the only thing that reminds us of Pedan,Cracken and Pipe and other characters not so long gone then great and if the signs annoy you Landy even better.

I think people in Argyll have more problems understanding what passing place signs mean, or is it the concept? Surely A & B council could save a load of money by not having these either. Mind you, they're real life savers if you've a 100mph purple prawn blob coming towards you...VVVVVVVVVVRRRRRRRRRRRRROOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMMMmmm

Dont have a problem with the Gaelic signs myself, the money could have been spent better else where I suppose, but then the Welsh have Welsh roadsigns and the Irish have Irish Gaelic roadsigns so why shouldnt we have them too.

Yes there are too many roadsigns but there you go, satnav is not the answer as there is only so lost you can be on a road.

I didnt realise that Gaelic roadsigns had made it as far south as Cheshire Pentland.....do you use them as target practice?

7th - if you were in any way local, if you had any knowledge of our community, you would know of such a place in existance at Balvicar ( where it HAS been for many years...)

Well Sally I know of the Live Prawn factory where the keep live prawns for the Spanish and French markets before sending them to the airport.....completely different thing to frozen prawns, apart fromt them both being prawns of course. Far better quality of product as well.
Yes I know it has been there for years I also remember when it was based on Easdale Island, in the old drill hall, which is now the Island of the damned's community hall.

But for what it's worth - I think the prawn shop does a good job - and they seem fairly community spirited giving work to those who would otherwise be unemployable on this island.

And the products good too - goes to people who want quality seafood and are prepared to pay accordingly - SS you may have Balvicar confused with Young's seafood who ship their prawns half way round the planet - just to be shelled (a bowl of rice a day is the going rate) - then
shipped all the way back here and sold as that undersized frozen sh*te that we accept for prawns.

I was confused too by 7th, but apparently he is a she of some substance.
The verbal bruising you tempt is probably better than the physical one you might get if you are tempted to start swinging your handbag! By all accounts she likes a bit of confrontation and isn't opposed to a bit of physical. Afterall she is a mother of four, and she spit them out sideways.

Any way bilingual signs, good just too many signs in general particularly at the crossroads coming from the cuan direction.....a bit blinding inthe dark.

I agree, you need undipped headlights at night on these dark little roads. How does having big signs that blind you with the reflected lights make driving safer?
And on another point, "Speed camera Signs" those ones witha black and white image of an old 6 x6 Rolleiflex....isn't it against the law to misrepresent things? to warn of safety/speed cameras that aren't there? Once you've worked out there isn't a camera there you ignore it.

Go to France and there is a only a speed camera sign where there is a speed camera. So you slow down.........if required.
