Good point, Jokey. Blubby is a bit over-the-top usually but I'm sure he didn't mean what he wrote. You guys are much needed here and are very welcome - and anyone with any travel behind them knows what a beautiful country Poland is, with standards of building better than on Seil. As you imply and as this forum shows, there is just a small element of the population here which has been nowhere, knows little, hates change and has a huge chip on its communal shoulders. In the real world of Seil, I think these sad antediluvian clowns represent a tiny minority but unfortunately they seem peculiarly attracted to this blog site....

I am somewhat confused that you agree with my point about the weakening of traditional Seil culture but at the same time severely disagree...too much stardust maybe? You then make a point about this by mentioning the cancelling of the Seil Games this year. This was a direct result of the weakening of all that has been good in the past rouind here; the organisers felt they could not continue because so few now offer to help.
I was interested by the following bucolic posts regarding the families with young children who could move to Seil into these relatively expensive houses. What job/profession do you forsee for these families in Oban?

Another aside: Nick B, I know you're away from these parts just now but can you please tell us what is your policy on allowing name changes on this blog? It seems to be a recurring theme here these days, eg guessing who used to be whom etc. So do you let our bloggers transmutate at will or have multiple monicers? Does it happen often? At £400000 I think their pace of life will be anything but slow...i.e two jobs etc etc. Glasgow has got tired of "downsizers" and its about time we did as well..

I hate to admit it but M.S has a point about planning, whether we think its good or not for Seil our perseption of it is not a reason to stop it happening

You have misunderstood me.

I was responding to Makes Sense's depressing comment that there never was and never would be affordable housing on Seil and his apparent satisfaction with that state of affairs.

Many of your countrymen are now working in service industries over here for wages that the locals are not prepared to work for, or are filling positions that can't be filled by the indigineous populaton. All the Poles I have met are hard working, friendly and extremely polite - even to me! Most of them are very overqualified for the positions they hold, but they never complain.

I was pointing out that if there is no affordable housing then there will be no-one to run the service industries our wealthier citizens take for granted as part of the infrastructure. My comment was asking in a mildly sarcastic manner where the workers - of any nationality - in Argyll's low-paid service industries were meant to live.

There were 2500 people living on seil at the height of the slate industry hard to imagine shops,schools and communities in areas that don`t exist any more.ther were allsorts of spinoffs engineering works , even a kind of healthservice for workers and their families.These people got on with it with a terrible transport system and dirt tracks, they nearly all had the same income and buying a house was out of the question.So stop complaining about the roads,scottish water, honest fishermen,prawns,shawlands, planning and look forward to gimp boy going off in a huff again. Glad to hear that Seil Blubber, I didn't feel offended, just a bit worried about that phrase.
This is really depressing when someone says there never was and never would be affordable housing on Seil. Thats true, many Poles are overqualified for the positions they hold and do not complain. Prices of houses in Poland rocketed in last few years after we join the European Union. Working abroad is an option to afford a place to live.
Good point, having a job is not everything if you do not have an affordable house. As Makes Sense would say I stated the obvious.

This forum seems to be multicultural. I can read different points of view from Scottish, English, Norweganized Danish Vikings and even somebody mentioned Peruwians. I think this is good.

What is wrong with road works. I see it that way: the road obstacles help me to improve my driving skills.

And what is wrong with local businesses? I don't know a lot about fishing but I think it cannot be anything unusual on the Island and it gives employment to people.

I think you are getting a bit ragged! Blubber is not being racist and makes it clear he respects the Poles. If there is one nation that has helped the British in the last few hundred years it is the Polish and they have always integrated well into British Society and made a real contribution, especially to the sales of beer which they enjoy drinking.

Do you stand to make any financial gain if the said planning request should go through?

I worked with a Polish chap not so long ago and he liked to drink a lot of beer, especially when decorating his house!!! Goodness knows what it's like inside, but I bet it's not a hole though!
