Spiderman, grow up!

You think these houses will stop the island population declining?

What are you on about? Exactly who do you think will buy these houses? Local working couples of childbearing age? I rather doubt it.

I really do not think that building £400,000 houses is going to bring in anyone particularly useful or likely to play a meaningful part in the local community. I am afraid that 7th's amusing post on gated idylls is far closer to the mark.

A declining population is not a problem anyway - rather, it is the demographics of the population that is the problem.

I also think that it is a pity a serious post like this gets turned to mush by people who just want to make a noise to show how clever they are. Life isn't all light hearted fun, even for superheroes, so get real Spidey!

Surely the chips on your shoulders must be as big and sad as your prejudices about so many of your fellow men! For Pete's sake, lighten up and start liking the world!  8)

Yes it's true - us mere mortals so obviously lack your superhero powers altruism. But I seem to remember your plea to Nick B about the evils of censorship.

Why should any opion other than yours be any less relevant?

:) Excuse me, Eric, I respect the views of everyone else on this blog - and I agree with some of what you lot are saying about this issue - but the reality is that all I said originally was shouldn't we be a bit more positive and it was you guys that just rubbished that comment as mush, what planet are you on, get real, just trying to show how clever you are etc.! Who's intolerant? me or Blubbering Seil?

Gosh, I've missed a lot going on today, while swanning about in sunny climes...
Problem with building houses along a small road, is the obvious HGV traffic with building materials. However, I'm not sure what the problem is with the likely inhabitants of £400,000 houses - that's how much a 2 bed flat can cost in certain parts of the big smoke - and Glasgow is probably not too far behind if you pick your area well. In other words, they may even be "normal" people! I do think that there is a requirement for more affordable housing, otherwise you will never keep your younger folk in the area - and everyone will have to sell pricey houses elsewhere to be able to afford to move to the lovely Isle of Seil.
There is a lot going for it - quiet, safe environment, and gorgeous scenery etc etc.. a few more house will not unduly affect that.
Spidey - I can see Norrin's universe trotting looking rather appealing...

People with half brains

Well Well. This is typical of jealous people right enough. Stupid comments relating to planning pplications and the like that you know NOTHING about.

It is in my opinion fairly slanderous to say you think there is something going on illegally within the application.

Another thing STUPID. Why do you think house prices are so expensive? Land idiot the cost of land makes it impossible to build cheap houses. So I suggest you get up off you ass and goo look for something which will provide an income to allow you to buy such a house.

Maybe even encourage you to get off benefits eh?

A recent survey by one of the big Uni's down south had the conclusion that in general rural housing is about 30% more expensive than that in city's. The cost of living is also higher. It would cost you less to get a two bedroomed flat in say Shawlands or even some parts of the West end of Glasgow than buying a terraced cottage in balvicar, you would also have the choice of finding some rented accomidation in Glasgow too, if you could'nt afford to buy.

I think the case for not biulding because of the state of the road is a bit of a red herring though, the fewer things going on down here the less likely road improvements will be.

"Land idiot the cost of land makes it impossible to build cheap houses."
Land with no planning or no chance of getting permision for a house is much cheaper than land with planning for a house.....not because land is intrinsicaly valued highly, but because houses at the moment are overvalued.

"It is in my opinion fairly slanderous to say you think there is something going on illegally within the application."

I aint talking about this one you clown......how can a planning permission that has only got into the O.T have been as far as a planning hearing....If you know such a lot about planning permisions and in particular this one tell us more Mr Big Bucks.

Build better roads and the baby boomers will soil their pants objecting .Theirs tens of thousands of pounds worth of prime shellfish every week going off the island build better roads to support the excellent businesses on the islands these communities need to survive and thrive in a heads up kind of way. :D :D :D :D

Well my my you must be a teacher. How did you know land with no planning permission is cheaper. State the obvious.

Oh and you reckon house prices are overvalued. Is this because you think Scottish properties should be much cheaper than Englands? Or because you missed the boat?

You must have been educated at the London School of economics. Idiot.

:?: Dubhsgeir, as an aside, is this excellent business of exporting prime shellfish along our crappy roads sustainable in the case of prawns? If so, why are the caught prawns getting smaller, now half the average size of those that occur in truly undisturbed ecosystems? Isn't this excellent business just another example of greed and overfishing? :?:

And this week's prize . . . .

Post by Seil Blubber »

for overbearing, pompous irrelevancy goes to the ineptly named 'Makes Sense'

How do you know no-one on here knows anything about planning? What gives you the moral right to comne on here and start throwing your weight around calling people names? Bad manners and not a little childish.

I don't think anyone has accused anyone else of anything illegal - certainly not in the case of this planning application. Ex planners setting themselves up as consultants and oiling the wheels with their former colleagues is sadly quite legal and Argyll and Bute is not the only place it happens.

I am afraid that the standard of debate on this subject is not up to the forum's usual high standards.

Hopefully when this application is bulldozed through the council will at least insist on some form of what is euphemistically called 'planning gain' - although this in itself is a dubious concept, somewhere between an extra tax and bribery depending on how you view it.

:?:  Very commendable comment, Blubbery, except that you consistently lower the tone yourself, with your own brand of "overbearing pompous" insults, eg yesterday blogging that my comments were "mush", "what are you on about", also that I'm "just making a noise trying to be clever" and to "get real" etc.. One law for you and another for everyone else? And if we don't agree with everything you say, we are all idiots! Yes, you are a real asset to open discussion! As I said yesterday, try to like the world a bit more - and its inhabitants. Sermon over! Sorry! KAPPOOOOW! 8)

What????????
Who are you Alistair Darling,......house prices now are around 50% higher when you take into acount inflation than they were before the property bust in the late eighties.....intrest rates WILL NOT remain this low for ever and finally it is impossible for everyone in britain to own there own home, the property "market" is effectivly legal pyramid selling. As for missing the boat, may be......but if there was adequate provision of rented accomidation in rural areas it wouldn't matter!!!!

I am not a fisherman but i`ve talked to the man in the prawn shop on this subject and he says that theirs been no change in the percentage of large medium and small prawns caught in the last ten years he should know. Also pot caught prawns are recognised as the most sustainable way of fishing and he will not take the inferior trawl caught kind.Iwas only highlighting the fact that there are good businesses on seil and Luing despite the nimbies and resties and we need to encourage them . I think you`ve been reading to much propaganda spidey.

 No, Dubhy, please don't be so patronising - I've just recently been eating real natural prawns from Barra, Benbecula, Mull, Harris and other more natural places! To me, it's not a matter of opinion (especially not that of the chief local beneficiary of overfishing, speaking from Le Ponderosa), it's a matter of direct recent experience. Go somewhere that doesn't have a small fleet of boats going out daily and see and taste the difference, Dubhy. You won't believe what prawns used to be like here on Seil and still are in a few places elsewhere. And, for heaven's sake, don't pontificate on the basis of the pleas of the guilty!! How naive can you get...... Anyway, maybe a 10-year historical reference point isn't good enough - I suspect that overfishing of prawns has gone on here for much longer than that.

However, in more general terms, you are quite right that we do need to support our (sustainable/respectable) local businesses. :) 8) :loveseil

What is going on here?

Post by Seilant »

I have been keeping out of this, but really Spiderman what is going on? You seem to be in favour of expensive housing estates which locals can't possibly afford but against our local industries which according to you are raping and pillaging the environment.

For what it's worth I think you are speaking rubbish about prawns . . . most of the biggest juiciest ones hurtle off to Glasgow to be flown to Spain.
