Fantastic lyrics
.
The lyrics are spot on, but I don't think the Corries' rather average accoustic strumming gives it the depth and grandeur required for an anthem.
Maybe an orchestral and/or pipe band treatment of this would be the answer?
(Lyrics below)
----------------
SCOTLAND WILL FLOURISH . . .
Scotland will flourish by the sweat of labor
The strength of our will and the force of our mind
Forget the old battles, those days are over
Hatred corrupts and friendship refines
Let the Scots be a nation proud of their heritage
With an eye to the future and a heart to forgive
And let us be rid of those bigots and fools
Who will not let Scotland live and let live
Let us govern over country wisely and fairly
Let each man and woman work with a will
And Scotland will flourish secure in the knowledge
That we reap our own harvest and ring our own till
And let us be known for our kind hospitality
A hand that is open proper to friends
A hard working people, proud and unbending
Scotland will thrive and win out in the end
Scotland will flourish by the sweat of labor
The strength of our will and the force of our mind
Forget the old battles, those days are over
Hatred corrupts and friendship refines
So let us be known for our kind hospitality
A hand that is open proper to friends
A hard working people, proud and unbending
Scotland will thrive and win out in the end

Keep it simple and catchy....boom bang a bang. The lyrics in this are far too laborious. Toss out every second and fifth word in six and you get about the right amount of content, making it shorter and no more a mouthful to get out.
Do a scottish version of Land of Hope and Glory and you will get something more akin to a national anthem

"You are you country - Your country is you"
If it's going to be the Corries - why not the "Dawning of the Day" - still relevant after 30 years. Youtube that if you will!!!!!!
Yeah sure you can beef it up with some orchestration - but the words are the emotion, sentiment, passion and power - the tune a merely vehicle to deliver them.
Just so long as it's not some old bat whining a man's a man - dirge or what.
or worse still - some Donald Shaw/Karen Mathieson souless inanity
PS - surely it's "Tulla"?????????

Think Canu has a more realistic view on modern Scotland......and the corries, although lyrically better than yon other dirge they wrote it is still 1970's kitch.
Hows about no national anthem and get important stuff (poverty, etc) sorted out....
If not hows about "in a big country" by Big Country......or perhaps "Restless Natives"

Wonderful
Seventh Seil sez:
You first, Seventh. You obviously don't see any grounds for optimism over the future of Seil or Scotland.
What exactly is the connection between a light-hearted discussion over a possible national anthem and the issue of poverty in our society? For goodness' sake lighten up a bit old chap.
Well, if that is an appropriate anthem for modern Scotland then we might as well all kill ourselves now.Think Canu has a more realistic view on modern Scotland

U Smell - welcome back from your absense.
Sadly, you don't present us with your unfounded knowledge on this occasion but subject us to this foul-mouthed acted-out "gangsta" nonsense.
Perhaps you should be placed in the same category as the last people who presented us with their unpleasant images!!
....and it's a pity you have to resort to this to try to shock us into emmigration !!

I think canusmellthat makes an interesting contribution. Ignorance can be bliss, and whilst most of us don't admire the content of this video it does open your eyes to what is out there....and it's not all good. So Seil Blubber adds a bit about poverty and gets rubbished for doing so. But one assumes this video is a result of a poor upbringing. What's the harm in going off-topic? This site is called Seil Chat. When you sit with friends to chat do you start out by saying today you can only talk about environmental issues, or Eastenders otherwise you will have to go and join another group and discuss another topic?
I know similar sites where a thread is started, "I wonder where this thread will go?" Several thousand posts later it is still going strong.
This site benefits from wide and varying views, and I don't think anyone should be ridiculed or made to feel uncomfortable for contributing to the site (unless of course they break rules on decency, prejudice, etc)
Carry on canusmellthat
