Finally - a Scottish Labour Party ?

Post by NickB »

.
The National is carrying a story today which claims that Scottish Labour are holding discussions over a split from London HQ to form an autonomous Scottish Labour Party.

No announcement likely before Thursday though !

It would tactically be a very shrewd move for Labour. They would gain much credibility when tackling the SNP next time round.
Definitely not to be encouraged.

Bill, I must hand it to you for your mastery of the vernacular - I wish I had your expertise.
Accolades over.
You have been conspicuous recently on these pages, in decrying any efforts of the Labour party, to dent the SNP inroads into their membership, so why should you not keep up the good cause, with the rather poor excuse that you do not have the card carrying credentials?.
When did only positive membership proof, allow one to shoot one's mouth off against the establishment?
Tomorrow it will all be water under the bridge, and you will be able to return your garage to it's former glory.

You're taking the 'papa india sierra sierra' again Jim. As you know in a democracy it is customary for a political party, like the Labour Party, to ballot it's card carrying members before making a fundamental change to it's constitution or structure. Or for the card carrying members to lobby the executive for a change.
It would be extremely novel if they balloted the card carrying members of the SNP as well !!

OK Bill -I stand corrected - although you would like to influence them you are powerless - must be a frustrating feeling after all the spokes you have tried to put in their wheel lately.
Anyway you will be fully employed very soon in restoring your garage to it's former glory, and dusting off the yellow tarpaulin into a safe place, ready for it's next outing - and you might even manage a bit of jogging.

Spanners surely Jim ?
Anyway the political sparring has been fun and may the best man (Party) win. We can debate the outcome and the consequences tomorrow.

Again I stand corrected - I did think at the time that adding spokes to a wheel was not counter productive. Anyone got the correct saying? - "spanner in the works" possibly?
As to the continuation of the political debate - early days, and we will have to wait and see what our current crop of SNP local "card carrying?" members post on this site.

Been sailing.

Only paper I have seen was a Sunday Telegraph.

It reckoned Cameron is going to give us FFA PDQ and see how we like it.

Nick B.
You are a great one for the abbreviations.
PDQ fortunately I am familiar with, but what on earth is FFA - the only thing that springs to mind is Free For All - this hardly seems to fit the context of your quote.
There may be others who are puzzling over obtuse abbreviations who would welcome your enlightenment.

Well who would have guessed that? - unless you are conversant with all the current machinations.
It's a curious thing about politics - things like the VAT rate, duty on anything, or tax changes can be done at the drop of a hat, overnight, but constitutional things like the abolishment of the Lords, implementing changes to powers for Holyrood, and the like get bogged down in bureaucratic committee infighting - I suspect to give our elected representatives something to fill their day, enjoy the perks of the job, and feel that they are doing something really worthwhile.
Cynical, that may be, but I seem to remember that after the referendum, there was a pledge made that concessions made to Holyrood would be on the statute book by about February and enacted before the voting which has just taken place.
Now it appears that the whole situation is still an open book for gerrymandering.
While in no way flying the flag for independence, I think that there are many politicians who make promises which they have no intention of honouring without the whole subject being scrutinised and time wasted by a bunch of people who would be better employed elsewhere.

I don't think the second part of that sentence is necessary :D

The thing is, the Scottish electorate are trusting the SNP to be different. It is a big ask for politicians, and if they betray the public trust they have been shown the SNP's fall will be long and hard.

At the moment I trust them. Time will tell if I am being naïve, but I really don't think I am.

Well it would appear that S. Jarron is a welcome addition to the YES camp - you are certainly getting a lot of support on these pages for this particular subject. Can we expect a St Andrew's cross or two outside his abode in the near future, to further the cause?
I well remember a voyage through the Georgian islands in lake Huron aeons ago when every homestead supported a Canadian flag and thinking "what's the point"? They are all in Canada anyway. So it would appear that if you have the desire to sport a St. Andrew's blue and white flag anywhere about your premises you are declaring to the outside world that you are a rabid nationalist, hell bent on achieving independence from those nasty Tories, south of the border - who are responsible for all that is wrong in the current situation.

That's a bit of a rant Jim.

'This particular subject' - or rather the subject of this thread - was the possible rebirth of the Scottish Labour Party. The whole forum is entitles 'Scottish Politics' - it is not 'The Independence Forum' or some such title. And of course Conservatives are well catered for in Scotland thanks to our proportional representation system at Holyrood, which gives them 15 seats.

What has this thread got to do with your 'Finally a Scottish Labour Party ' post ??

In all fairness I think we are all a bit guilty of going 'off topic ' at times :rant on

Regards

Snoman

PS only newspaper ST ? Lol off topic - sailing must have been outside Scottish territorial waters ?
