“The Claim Of Scotland” is a book published in 1968 and written by one Herbert James Paton, a philosopher and a senior civil servant at the Admiralty and Foreign Office.
In response to an overweening, centralising state, H J Paton set out cogent arguments for reversing the flow of power from Scotland to London by asserting and arguing the case for devolution in Scotland, using historical and contemporary examples to illustrate the traditional disregard and contempt of the British state for the legitimate claims of Scotland.
A fascinating insight written at a time when the political landscape in Scotland was about to be transformed by North Sea Oil and the rise of the Scottish National Party.
