Autumn/Winter Rowing

Now that the nights are drawing in, evening outings in Selkie (the Seil coastal rowing skiff) are coming to a halt.

However, some folk are rowing on weekdays, during the day. Outings will also happen on Saturday and Sunday afternoons during the autumn/winter. Half term sessions available!

The boat is kept at Nick Hunter's pontoon, and a typical session lasts an hour. No special kit is needed - just wellies/sandals/crocs. Lifejackets are provided.

More people are always welcome - male, female, young (P7s and above - any younger find the oars too long/heavy), old - everyone. No matter if you have never rowed before, we'll show you how. Come on your own or with a friend/s. People who'd like to (learn) to cox the skiff would be particularly welcome (must be over 9 stone).

Last weekend at Loch Venachar showed what great fun rowing is, even in Autumn weather. It's a great pity we didn't do better, but given the ages of our crew we weren't too bad.

There must be lots of younger people on Seil who would enjoy getting out for some free exercise and sport in the open air, a great way to lose weight and keep fit.

Would it help if we tried to raise the profile of the Selkie by keeping her somewhere more visible? If so, where could that be? Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Can anyone help?

The weather has stopped rowing for a wee while, so we are looking for an undercover, weather-tight space in which do some running repairs and mods on Selkie. Hopefully, it will only be for a week or two. The skiff is 22' long and 5'8" at its widest.

Thanks to John MacFarlane, we have a space in his boatshed at Balvicar for our winter maintenance.

The plan is to row Selkie round to the pier on Wednesday (the forecast MAY be right!) and then let her dry out for a wee while. A few woodworking jobs are needed, plus paint - all hands are most welcome. Watch this space for timings.

There will be now rowing therefore for a couple of weeks but we'll be back in the water as soon as we can.

The skiff is now back on station at Nick's pontoon - having rowed back from Big John's boatshed towing the launching trolley (don't ask!).

The sun is shining, the water is sparkling - rowing continues at 12 noon on Wednesday, Saturdays and Sundays. Everybody welcome!

[except for this weekend, 15/16 March, when we are taking Selkie to the Isle of Mull skiff launch at Tobermory. Space for two more rowers in the car if you'd like to come along too].
