There hasn't been an English winner for 76 years............oh dear how sad!
Ahm gonna get banned!
Re: Come On Andy !
Congratulations Andy. For the first two sets you played like a true Brit, but oh dear, in the third set it was squeaky bum time and you started to play like a Scotsman. In the end of course, the Serb decided to let him win, and was gracious in 'defeat'.
I'm only joking, I don't think that but it was a shame to see the likes of Cameron and Posh, and behind them, a little rotund Scotsman with a big grin and a blue and white flag jumping up and down when he won. But let's not forget the farce of Scolympians. At the Olympics which Britain hosted there were heroes from all parts of our nation and they came together in the best tradition to give our little island nation fourth place in the medals table, a real example of Better Together. And I noticed Andy Murray made sure he took the hand of that great Scot, Will Hoy, a man who has publicly stated his opposition to Scottish Independence. Sport is supposed to be above politics, but even still some (like Cameron and Salmond) must try to take some of the champion's glory by intruding into their limelight.

Re: Come On Andy !
Mmmm...bet he's a 'YES', didn't he hope that Sweden beat the England team in a big footy comp?

Re: Come On Andy !
Are you going to alienate yourself from all the women you might ever have known by suggesting a male win means more than a female win? BTW when was the last 'Scottish' female winner of Wimbledon? Or the last time Scotland won the World Cup, or a Scot won the Tour de France................ It isn't worth examining too closely. The results are much more impressive when we talk about the achievements of Britons. We can be English and British, Scots and British, Welsh and British, Irish and British. Personally I find it easier just to say I am British. It saves a stupid argument.

Nope, he's definitely in the pro-UK camp. He knows the benefits of the United Kingdom and has grown up considerably since his ABE silliness.
Plus I'm reassured here that there is no anti-English element to the Yes message.
Andy has learnt from the vilification of Sir Chris Hoy by the cyberNats that it can be unwise for a public figure to come out in favour of retaining the Union.........I have no doubt he will support the No vote very publicly much closer to the time.
The vast majority Scottish sporting icons are against independence but the BetterTogether are keeping their powder dry. Expect a major series of soundbite adverts in the week before the vote from our sporting greats.

Oh Dear!
Another thread hijacked by the Referendum brigade.
Can they think of nothing else?

Re: Come On Andy !
Don't Blame Me - I voted YES!
Re: Come On Andy !
Yes Scotland has a fine tradition in Men's tennis, although my uncle, Men's Doubles World Champion (Over 85's) didn't get all the plaudits he deserved. He's still going strong, playing tennis and skiing at the age of 93. This from 2008 http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/tennis ... n--87.html
Re: Come On Andy !
As one of Scotland's leading sportsmen, amongst heroes like Gavin Hastings, Alex Ferguson, Chris Hoy.....I'm reasonably sure George will be giving an emphatic, "No!"
Re: Come On Andy !
Although Pentland Pirate has a cheery grin on his face - if avatars are anything to go by - and they probably are'nt, and does have some good sound common sense, I find it a bit offputting that every contribution he makes is geared towards propoganda for the forthcoming BIG R. Surely sport has little bearing on the subject, and on that general subject, I find it hard to understand, that if my mother should happen to have given birth to me while she happened to be north of the border at that time, that any subsequent achievements on my behalf should be credited to the country where her confinement took place. This nationality thing is getting a bit ridiculous.
Re: Come On Andy !
You're so right! Alex Salmond started it. For me, the whole independence issue is one which I wish had never been started.
But if you read many of the recent threads I am far from being the only culprit of getting involved in it. Blame me if you like, the cheery face of the only person on this forum prepared to show their real face

Re: Come On Andy !
Well that's a nice honest reply.
Although like many another contributor he has a bee in that bunnet of his when it comes to the BIG R.
And it is a credit to his authority that this purports to be a genuine portrait and not some fanciful screen behind which most of the contributors seem to feel they need to cloak their identity behind - but as an aside, surely the purchase of a shaver would do wonders to the general appearance, although given the general scruffinence of residents hereabouts, maybe it is par for the course.

Re: Come On Andy !
Swoon - haha seems to be a bit contradictory, either the butterflies play havoc with sense or haha suggests - go and pull the other one. But then Foxglove (hiding behind a mere name) has been known to be flighty in the past - there was recently a long running flirtration with another member of this forum (again hiding their true identity) which revolved around zimmers and car parks.
So Pentland Pirate - I hand it to you to produce a recognisable likeness of your true self (if a bit to the scruffy side at the time of recording), compared to some of these others who want to imagine themselves as freedom fighters, cartoon characters, aliens. or dropouts from the Louvre.
Is it not a sad reflection on the current state of our society that the only way people are willing to voice their thoughts or opinions is under the cloak of anonymity?
There now - if that contribution keeps this thread out of the doldrums, it has been worth the typing effort
