Is anybody else being incessantly bothered by 'phone calls in which an automated voice advertises a "window scrappage scheme" whereby you can scrap your old windows and swap them for new "energy A-rated" ones? We're getting at least one call a day, and on Friday had FOUR calls. The 'phone number is withheld, so there's no way of blocking the calls short of putting everyone we know onto an "allow" list - which, of course, we're not likely to do.
The recording is voice activated, so if you see a caller display that says
International call
Unavailable (or out of range)
either ignore it or pick up the 'phone and wait to hear the disconnect.

Aye, feckin' annoying. Also why do we have to put up with begging envelopes from the church, thought 'the lord would provide'. Totally irrelavant in this day and age.

It's the amount of calls that are the nuisance, relating to PPIs, energy saving, insurance and also calls from folk saying they'll put an end to the nuisance calls. [Doesn't work in most cases].
Also, have no worries about anything 'coming back to bite me', even if the posters remain anonymous. About time people spoke up without fear of comebacks.

So, are we in the business of grading replies on a personal scale? (I refer to Snoman's cryptic post) between presumably one and ten. But what is the significance of not a sev....en - more than six presumably, but what is that in the general scheme of things.
Please can someone enlighten me to the current richter scale and what is a good score, and what should have the poster retiring to lick their wounds, and whether it is relevant to the content of the post.
As for Ms Rodger - you have a point about all the unwanted telephone calls we get from the Indian sub-continent, where multitudes of underpaid people are coralled into call centres to harasss the residents of these fair isles, at the behest of multinationals with an axe to grind. It would be interesting to know what the success rate is for all their efforts - and as for PPI - surely there cannot be an inhabitant of UK who has paid this but has not yet been inveigled into trying to get redress from the supplier, with a hefty whack going to the facilitator.
That might just generate some response from what has been currently a lacklustre forum.

So- a reply to the previous two posts -
Yes to be correct it should read "Has been lately", or alternatively "Is currently", a lacklustre forum - the message is the same. There seems to be a current lack of interesting controversial local issues to get people's dander up - either that or the silent non-contributing majority cannot overcome their fear of expressing their opinion publically, or find a keyboard intimidating - someone out there reading this posting, feel free to speak for the non-contributors, as to why they like reading but not contributing.
Secondly, in reply to Snoman - I am sorry if I missed out on his joke, and at the risk of hi-jacking this thread, in response to sev...en - I would like to deplore the current fashion in the media of giving out scores of any sort by having a huge unneccessary pause between the announcement and the actual result - evidently this is supposed to heighten the tension for both the participants and the viewers- for the participants it amounts to cruelty, and for the viewers (speaking personally) it is counter productive in raising tension.
As they said in the bad old days when smoking was considered fashionable - " Put that in your pipe and smoke it"

Having consulted the TV schedules (Saturday night 6.30pm), it is evident that Snoman is a big fan of Come Dancing. While, not myself having considered this particular programme high on the viewing schedule, I must agree with Snoman that what takes place on this programme is far more civilised than the current fashion for disco dancing where the music? is so loud and canned that any meaningful conversation is impossible, and one even has no need of a partner to enjoy the experience. An ability to move one's appendages in approximate time to the music? seems to be all that is required to take to the floor.
So Snoman, you have my endorsement for a civilised TV presentation, but as for the rest of BBC 1 on a Saturday night my own grading would be about 3 out of 10.

Got lots of cold calls from an automated call system regarding "The Regional Windows Scrappage Scheme" at all times of the night and day.
Pestered by a machine with a long message which ends with "press 2 if you would like more info or 9 if you want to be removed from our calling list".
So, press 9,
are you removed?
Are you XXXXX (insert swear word here).
So eventually pressed 2 to speak to an intelligent human being ( which turned out to be a very loose description).
Some female with a Scottish accent phoned me back.
I am also Scottish so its not an insult its just so readers can compare "human beings" who call them.
Conversation went as follows
Me: “Hi, Can I stop you there,,,I would like to know the name of your company and the address so I can write a complaint letter.
I don’t have a problem with you but I want to complain about your company.”
Her: “The name of the company is The Regional Scrappage Scheme but I can’t give you the address.”
Me:” Why?”
Her: “Data Protection Act.”
Me: “Sorry,,,,,, data protection Act?”
“What data are you protecting?”
“You’re a company for god sake.”
“How are people supposed to communicate with you?”
“You have to be able to give me an address where I can write a letter?”
Her: “I can’t give you an address because if I gave you an address you could come to my office and take us hostage or something.”
(Absolutely no joking that’s what she said)
Me: “Seriously!?”
“You know what, I don’t believe this is a valid company.”
Her: “Well it is.”
Me: “So you’re telling me this is a genuine company called The Regional Scrappage Scheme and it is registered at companies house?”
Her: “Yes it is.”
Me: “Well in that case I will look up the registered address at companies house and then contact the ombudsman.”
Her: “Realy?”
At that point I got fed up and said “goodby” and hung up.
So I guess the thing to ask them is for their address and telephone number.
Of course there is no company called the “The Regional Scrappage Scheme”, but I guess I will have to log on to companies house to make sure.

Yup, I think most people everywhere get these call.

Now, we don't answer calls which display 'Witheld,' 'International,' 'Out of Area,' etc and it's got so bad we no longer answer calls the number of which we do not know! We now reckon if it's a genuine the caller will leave a message and if we know who it is, from the part message left, we will pick up!

But, both my wife and I's employers are local authority who come up 'witheld.' Also we have friends and relations who are genuinely international. We have told the various agencies that need to know this.

We are also registered with the T.P.S. but it still doesn't matter. We still get the calls!

If responding to companies who ask to let the person you speak to on a phone or on the web and they ask you to opt in or out of receiving 'information' - select NO, and, or, tell them.

This also applies to the recent Register of Electors posted out. Not opting out the 'Edited Register' could also land you with unsolicited calls, mail, emails etc you don't really want!

Anybody with an answer to this problem please post here - don't phone, or text, or email!!!! :banghead
